Barback / Barista

Classification: Full-time, hourly, Non-exempt

At Southall, we are looking for team members to help us as we continue our journey to inspire culinary consciousness – showcasing fresh, seasonal fare that highlights the path from seed to plate. Our dining experiences take place just steps from where our ingredients are grown and raised. The Barista / Barback will be responsible for guiding our guests through an immersive coffee experience, anticipating their needs and delivering the highest of personalized service and attention. In addition, support service for the bar staff.

Our two restaurants, Sojourner, and January, each evoke a feeling of their own; Sojourner, our center of the life in the Inn, where all are welcome to gather, and our all-day and in-room dining emanates from its kitchen. The vibe is elegant but casual. January, coming soon, will be open exclusively for dinner, with each meal dependent on the season and ingredients available for harvest. It is where our guests will come to share the joy of a meal with family and friends all while watching it all prepared in state-of-the-art open kitchen.

This position will require open availability.

Responsibilities

  • Describe menu items to guests and/or suggest offerings that might be appealing by explaining the product details and preparation descriptions
  • Stock necessary products for the successful operation of the outlet
  • Weigh, grind and pack coffee beans as needed
  • Complete all side work
  • Offer guests an enjoyable and expertly served coffee experience conforming to Southall standards
  • Prepare and serve hot and/or cold specialty coffees, wine and various beverages.
  • Check temperatures of freezers, refrigerators and/or heating equipment to ensure proper functioning
  • Maintain a clean station and work area at all times
  • Assist in the overall operation of the outlet whenever needed
  • Inform the manager or assistant of all customer complaints and makes appropriate efforts to correct the problem
  • Requisition, pick up, verify, and put away all requisitions for liquor, wine, beer, juices, soft drinks and food items used for the bar areas
  • Stock the bar areas with liquor, wine, beer, juices, soft drinks, glassware and condiments
  • Develop a complete working knowledge of all products served by the bar, i.e. liquors, wines, beers, ports, Armagnacs, eau de vies, cognacs, specialty drinks, etc.
  • Understand the menu and the daily specials as well as what is not available
  • Check and recheck the bar during service
  • Keep the bar area neat and tidy at all times clearing dishes and glassware whenever possible
  • Ensure that the bar is stocked and all side opening and closing duties are completed
  • Recognize regular guests and to greet them by their name
  • Recognize and address potential intoxicated, disruptive or undesirable guests
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Basic beer, wine, and liquor knowledge

  • Strong sense of urgency

Education and Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Must be able to push, pull and lift 50 lbs
  • Available to work weekends, evenings and/or holidays
  • Must be able to walk and stand for prolonged periods as needed and able to work in all weather conditions
